Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!

Stefan MatteauDon’t worry it’s not ’94 all over again, this Matteau is playing for the New Jersey Devils! Stefan Matteau, the Devils’ first pick in the 2012 NHL entry draft, has finally made his way up to the NHL. You might remember his father, former New York Ranger, Stéphane Matteau, for his double overtime goal against the Devils in game 7 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals. But, let’s focus on the young Matteau.

It has been a rollercoaster ride for Stefan Matteau this past year. In April the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) declared him ineligible to play for the U.S. team in the Under 18 World Hockey Championships. There went his chance at a gold medal.

While he had committed to playing college hockey with University of North Dakota, he decided to join the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (where his father is an assistant coach) instead.

In December, it looked like Matteau made the roster to play for the U.S. in the World Junior Championship, but he ended up being cut from the team.

A month later, the Devils called Matteau up to training camp. Here was his chance to prove himself. During a scrimmage played between the New Jersey Devils and Albany Devils, Matteau scored a goal – a shot that come across the high slot. Matteau grabbed the puck and ripped it by Brodeur before he could move to stop it. This showed everyone his scoring ability.

“This kid’s shot is big time already.” – Martin Brodeur

The Devils put Matteau on the roster and gave him No. 15 to wear his first 5 games. Normally, you would get 10 games but because of the shortened season, he only has 5 games to prove that we should keep him around.

Matteau’s skated in a line with center, Jacob Josefson, and right-winger, Cam Janssen, in his first NHL game played against the Islanders. Matteau saw 7 minutes of ice time but it was a night I’m sure he will always remember.

From what I have seen from his first game, I really like Matteau’s edgy way of playing. He is a true Devil.

  1. I really like this kid! Plays with an edge you need in the Atlantic Division, but has great offensive upside! What a pick by Lou and co. And everyone wanted him to forfeit that pick. When will we learn to trust Lou!
