The Metropolitan Division: Part VI – The Philadelphia Flyers

New Jersey Devils vs Philadelphia Flyers

With the 2013-14 season looming closer, we’ll be taking a look at the new and old Division match-ups in the new formed Metropolitan Division in this weekly blog. This week we take a look at a team that the Devils have a long and storied history with, the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Schedule

  • Philadelphia at New Jersey: Saturday, November 2, 7:00 PM
  • New Jersey at Philadelphia: Thursday, November 7, 7:00 PM
  • Philadelphia at New Jersey: Tuesday, January 7, 7:30 PM
  • New Jersey at Philadelphia: Tuesday, March 11, 7:00 PM

The Devils and Flyers square-off four times this season, with the first two games taking place less than a week apart and the final two taking place closer to the end of the season.

The Teams

The Flyers looked to remedy their goaltending situation during the off-season, picking up free agent Ray Emery, formerly with Chicago. Emery had a stellar year last year, finishing 17-1-0 in 21 games played, with a .922 save percentage and a 1.94 GAA.

Earlier this week, the Devils signed RW Damien Brunner to a two-year, $5 million contract after signing him a training offer. In addition, the Devils reduced their training camp roster down to 28. The Devils assigned goalie Scott Wedgewood, defensemen Brandon Burlon, Eric Gelinas, and Jon Merrill, and forwards Stefan Matteau, Rod Pelley, Tim Sestito, and Mike Sislo to Albany.

Last Year

The Devils finished last season a dominating 4-0-1 against the Flyers, their lone loss coming in a 2-1 shootout in Philadelphia on March 15. The four victories were by a score of 3-0, 5-3, 5-2, and 3-0, resulting in the Devils outscoring the Flyers 17-7 in the season series.

The Devils weren’t the only team to exploit the Flyers poor goaltending last season, with the Flyers giving up 141 goals in 48 games, the most in the Atlantic Division. Ilya Bryzgalov started 40 games last season and finished at 19-17-3 with a 2.79 GAA. With the Flyers signing Emery, there’s now a possibility that Bryzgalov could be on the move, with Pittsburgh and Florida being two early contenders.

The Match-Up

Devils-Flyers games don’t need an introduction, fans already know what they’re getting into. There’s a reason games against the Flyers are marked on the calendars of fans early in the year. Expect a lot of penalties to be taken between both teams, as usual, and for the Devils to look to repeat their offensive dominance of the Flyers this season. The Flyers will definitely be looking towards Emery to help back-up their team and prevent some of last season’s short-falls from reoccurring.
